  • Italy Visits,Wineries & Restaurant Recommendations

Heading to Italy/France for 3 1/2 weeks in July with husband for 20th wedding anniversary - as he is an 'Italian Winejunkie' and NV Winemaker....would love some recommendations on top winery visits and dining to make this an outstanding trip. Our self-guided itinerary includes Rome, Siena, Santa Margherita/ Cinque Terre, La Morra/Piedmonte, Bellagio/ Lake Como, Eze/ Monaco and Cannes. 14 year daughter in tow...so all types of recommendations welcome - Thanks

No recs to share, Leah, as I've yet to get there (my wife and I chose a trip to Napa over Italy for our 15th, three years ago). Just wanted to say welcome and I look forward to reading your contributions in some of the threads here.

    Best,

Thanks Andy...ah yes...post #1, figured the best place for food, wine and travel recs is this board and i'm trying to surprise Mike with some nice visits and dining on our trip. Not sure how much I will add to the wine talk...Mike is my expert there hopefully someone will reply

Re: Italy Visits,Wineries & Restaurant Recommendations

This would seem like the most appropriate forum to post this in, although the traffic here is not as high as in Wine Talk and I have seen some similar threads posted on that forum in the past. If you don't receive many responses here, you might try re-posting it there. There is a wealth of relevant knowledge on the board, so i'm sure you'll get recommendations once your post catches some attention.

In any case, don't be bashful about contributing to the threads over in Wine Talk. I'd imagine you have a lot of interesting experiences to share and I'm guessing you and Mike drink some tasty bottles from time to time.

Good luck with the trip planning.

Leah - I haven't been to italy yet but was thinking of going soon for my 15th anniversary. There is a ton of threads already on this topic....just use the search function and throw in Italy visits, Tuscany visit, etc.

For Siena this will help. My advice is still the same.

Re: Italy Visits,Wineries & Restaurant Recommendations

Thanks Gary, I have printed the information and rec's - do many of these places require prior reservations or shall we just have our hotel call and reserve when we arrive

I appreciate your time and help

Re: Italy Visits,Wineries & Restaurant Recommendations

At the least have your hotel call and make a reso. But you might want to try and book early. I have only been to Italy in early spring. Not really sure about July. Most of these places are small and have limited space.

Also if you stay in La Morra you should check out this place.

And from the center of town Bovio is just down the hill in the direction of alba.
Very good place to eat and drink.

In Rome you might want to visit this shop. Grab a bottle of red - Cesanese and a bottle of white - Frascati and some supplies for a picnic.

Re: Italy Visits,Wineries & Restaurant Recommendations

I have stayed in Monterosso twice, at this place. Good basic hotel. I would imagine that in July the crowds will be stupid. Drink local wines and eat Focaccia and a lot of walking. I had a pretty good meal at Ciak. Not sure how good the place is now as I haven't been to this area in a few years. Osteria e Cantina de Mananan in Corniglia was our best meal. But the place can be a bit tough. The area is beautiful just not sure I would fight the crowds in July.

Like Leah and her husband, my wife and I have trip to Tuscany planned for this year. We're going to Montepulciano for a week in May with 4 other couples. We have a farmhouse rented, but would love to hear recco's for winery tours and/or dining in the area. I have read the threads Gary has referenced, and they were helpful.
