  • TN: 09 Cristia, 02 Blankiet, 04 Quilceda, 97 Opus, 97 Phelps Backus

Wife and daughter in Florida for 9 days. On good behavior during the week.

    Thursday w a client:
2009 Cristia CDP, regular bottling. I have had a number of these. Great QPR, never disappoints. Lush texture, glycerin, kirsch.

Friday night w dad up north:
    2002 Blankiet Paradise Hills Merlot
Smooth times 3. Plum, milk chocolate, dark berries. Did I say smooth? Just doesn't have the finish of a cab. Mature, drink up.

Saturday night a serious wine buddy decided to stop in. Dad came over with an empty glass of course...
    2004 Quilceda Creek Cab
I opened this at 3 pm, we drank it at 5 pm. Disjointed first taste. Blackberries. Another taste an hour later showed some serious smoke that never came back. Interesting. I am a big texture guy. This was solid with no hard edges, polished, concentrated blackberries, black licorice. Long finish. Great stuff.

    1997 Opus One
I was curious how this might show after the QC. Some Bordeaux on the nose with dark fruit. Same on the palate. Lighter in body than the QC as expected but it really stood up. A-Typical Opus when it is showing well. Best initially, gradually lost its exuberance, but no complaints.

    1997 Joseph Phelps Backus Vineyard
I have been saving this for a long time. Juicy sweet burst of fruit in the midpalate. If you have ever had a great 1997 Merryvale Profile you will know what I mean. Didn't have the weight of the QC either. Similar to the Opus, it seemed to lose exuberance over time, a point or maybe two. Again, good stuff.

We kept commenting that we had three great wines, all showed well.
