  • Holiday Notes (La Miss, Pegau, FX Pichler, C. Bouchard, etc)

    Christmas Eve:
    • 2004 Martinelli Chardonnay Martinelli Road - USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley (12/24/2008)
Very disappointing given the notes on CT. Seemed flabby and one dimensional....liquified buttered popcorn. An off bottle perhaps? (82 pts.)
    • 2000 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc - France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan (12/24/2008)
      Badly oxidised. NR (flawed)
    • 2004 MacPhail Pinot Noir Sangiacomo Vineyard - USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast (12/24/2008)
Last bottle. What a shame. Similar profile as previous bottles: Burgundy (funk) meets California (fruit). (92 pts.)
    Christmas Dinner:
    • N.V. Cedric Bouchard Champagne Blanc de Noirs Roses de Jeanne "Les Ursules" - France, Champagne (12/25/2008)
Subtle hints of raspberry on nose and palate. Very precise, bone dry profile. Excellent, food-friendly sparkler. (94 pts.)
    • 2004 Coche-Dury Bourgogne Blanc - France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Blanc (12/25/2008)
Had some reduction that somewhat blew off, but not entirely. The acid is at the forefront at this point, but there seems to be some fruit that wants to emerge. Not sure if time will improve this....nevertheless I'm going to wait and see with my remaining bottle. (88 pts.)
    • 2005 F.X. Pichler Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Von den Terrassen - Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau (12/25/2008)
Lovely wine, paired with stone crabs. Floral and lush without being too sweet with a little spice and mineral on the finish to keep things in check. Love this producer. (90 pts.)
    • 1998 Château La Mission Haut-Brion - France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan (12/25/2008)
Drank alongside 1998 Pichon-Lalande and was the belle-of-the-ball. Took some time to open up, but when it did the nose was borderline explosive. Classic Graves character: smoky, tobacco-box & cedar with a core of dark fruit and scorched earth. Tannins were supple but always present. Should continue to improve--although it was a real treat with our Christmas prime rib. (95 pts.)
    • 2001 Domaine du Pégaü Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (12/25/2008)
Drank this one later in the evening with cheese course. Still think it's a few years away from truly singing, but the potential is definitely there. Deep red fruits with traditional CdP pepper and earthiness. Chewy tannins are noticable, but don't detract. (92 pts.)

Was your bottle of Martinelli cloudy at all? Saw a bunch of '04 Chardonnay from them that were cloudy and had a lot of "off" flavors. New batch showed up later and looked completely different. '05s and '06s didn't look that way.

I still love '05 Austrians, particularly Pichler. Thanks for the notes.

It was VERY cloudy....but no more so than the average Aubert chard.
